Glossary - L

Latency - LAT

The time it takes an information package to be sent from a source to a destination.

Laser Diode - LD

A semiconductor device similar to a light-emitting diode. It uses a p-n junction to produce coherent light where all waves are at the same frequency and phase. This coherent light is emitted by a laser diode using a process “Light Amplification by Stimulated Radiation Emission,” referred to as LASER. As it uses p-n junction to produce laser light, hence the name laser diode.

Laser LiFi

A variant of LiFi technology that uses lasers instead of visible light to transmit data.

Load Balancing

This refers to efficiently distributing incoming network traffic across a group of backend servers, also known as a server farm or server pool.

Light Communications Alliance - LCA

An open, non-profit association of members who aim to promote Light Communications technology

Light Emitting Diodes – LEDs

A semiconductor device, which can emit light when an electric current passes through it. To do this, holes from p-type semiconductors recombine with electrons from n-type semiconductors to produce light.

Light Detection and Ranging System - LIDAR

A remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to the Earth.

LiFi - Light Fidelity

A wireless communication technology that uses light to transmit data.

LiFi Infinity

A Nigerian and UK-based company offering a range of LiFi products and other services.

LiFiLED

An Ivorian-based company offering a range of LiFi products and other services.

LiFiMax®

An optical wireless communication system, made by Oledcomm, providing up to 16 simultaneous users with an ultra-high-speed, highly secured and radio wave-free wireless network access thanks to invisible light.

LiFiMAXTab

The first Android tablet with natively integrated LiFi.

LINCNET - LiFi-enabled 5G for industrial and medical networks

A project that contributes to the digitisation in healthcare and in the industrial environment. It helps to expand Germany's economic leadership and strengthen its technological sovereignty. 15 partners are researching and developing networking solutions that intelligently combine the currently most modern transmission technologies LiFi, Powerline Communication and 5G. The focus of LINCNET is data communication via the spectrum of light

Local Area Network - LAN

A group of computers and peripheral devices that share a common communications line or wireless link to a server within a distinct geographic area.

Load Balancers

A device that acts as a reverse proxy and distributes network or application traffic across a number of servers. Load balancers are used to increase the capacity (concurrent users) and reliability of applications.

Long-Term Evolution - LTE

A fourth-generation (4G) wireless standard that provides increased network capacity and speed for cellphones and other cellular devices compared with third-generation (3G) technology.

Long-Term Evolution-Advanced - LTE-Advanced

A cellular networking standard that offers higher throughput than its predecessor, the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard.

Latency

It is an expression of how much time it takes for a data packet to travel from one designated point to another. The measurement of latency is measured in milliseconds.

Line of Sight

The imaginary line between an observer and the target. In communication, line of sight is the direct path from a transmitter to the receiver and the obstructions that may fall in that path. A clear line of sight is important to high-speed communication.
